Premier League Preview: Newcastle Vs Bolton

Newcastle are set to enjoy Premier League match time at St James's Park, on February 26, 2011, in match week 28, in the second of a two-leg encounter.

In the first leg, hosted by Bolton at the Reebok Stadium on November 20, 2010, the hosts thrashed the Magpies by a humiliating 5 -1 margin. Johan Elmander and Kevin Davies each got a brace of goals for the winners, with Lee completing the tally, while Carroll got the consolation strike for the losers.

Kevin Davies scored off a penalty on 18 minutes to put the hosts ahead, and with 6 minutes to go to half-time, Lee made it 2-0. When 5 minutes after the interval, Elmander made it 3-0, the game looked all but over. But almost immediately, Carroll reduced the margin. With 18 minutes of regulation time to go, Elmander got his second goal and an injury time penalty taken by Davies completed the rout.

For Newcastle, the game was lost in the first half; with little to choose between the teams, a couple of harsh decisions may have tilted the game irretrievably in Bolton's favour. The Magpies' midfield suffered in the absence of Tiote and Barton.

Bolton displayed good team work as their four midfielders combined well. Muamba and Holden in particular were effective as a pair. Lee was outstanding, and Matt Taylor revealed how he has improved beyond recognition in the last year.

Head to head, Newcastle and Bolton have won 9 league games each of the 19 played between them.
