In triage, a health provider should be able to prioritize patients with different conditions in order to maximize the number of lives saved in the most efficient time. This is the core principle of an emergency room set up. An emergency room nurse is responsible for the assessment and recognition, as well as putting together an effective intervention for a patient who is at a critical or life threatening phase of trauma or illness. To be able to be qualified for the position of an emergency room nurse, a licensed nurse must be able to have a certification of Advanced Cardiac Life Support and some institutions even require an experience in a general medical surgical ward.

Being an emergency nurse requires a nurse to possess the qualities of leadership as well as team play. Since there are patients who need immediate attention, a nurse must be able to do things in a fast paced and coordinated way in order to minimize injuries and in order to avoid unnecessary fatalities. And since, the severity of cases differ in the emergency room, a nurse should also have a good grasp of the concept of ABC or airway, breathing and circulation in order to prioritize which condition should be given utmost priority. Just like in any other specialized area, a nurse must be able to possess critical thinking in order to assess and respond effectively to different clients.

Clinical Supervisor

Supervisory position is part of the things learned in nursing management, a course that is taken by students taking in a BS degree in nursing. Being a clinical supervisor is a serious job. The clinical supervisor is the one who is responsible for checking the professional issues and casework of nurses in different wards. They are also the ones who are responsible for ensuring the long term and short term plans and goals of the nurses in different areas in relation to the institution's standard. Aside from nurses' professional issues, the clinical supervisor is also responsible for organizing and keeping track of documentations of the institution he or she works for. This is for both organizational and administrative purpose of being a clinical supervisor.

There are different ways to become a clinical supervisor. Firstly, a licensed nursing practitioner could have a post graduate certificate that directly tackles supervisory models, styles and techniques. This way, the course will directly address the supervisory responsibilities in managing an institution and fellow nurses. And secondly, licensed practitioners could opt for finishing a post master's certificate or a PhD in order to be qualified for a clinical supervisory position. When it comes to the regulations of different states, there are different states that would require certification examinations before nursing practitioners with post-master's certificate or PhD could become a clinical supervisor. Being a clinical supervisor is an arduous job that requires both critical thinking skills, interpersonal skills and organizational skills. Since a clinical supervisor has an overview of the institution and the nursing staffs of different areas; they are required to be knowledgeable of different practices in nursing thus, the requirement of PhD or post master's certificate.
