The pre-season friendly matches culminated with a 3-2 victory against local rivals Manchester City at Wembley Stadium in the traditional curtain raiser for the season, when the previous seasons Premier League and FA Cup winners compete for the Community Shield. The victory will have given United a psychological advantage over big spending City, who are likely to be one of their closest rivals for the Premier League title this season.

United's twentieth season in the Premier League, of which they have won the title twelve times, began with a visit to West Bromwich Albion, Wayne Rooney opened the scoring for the Reds, although a mistake from new goalkeeper David de Gea allowed West Bromwich to equalise. The Reds secured the win thanks to a deflected own goal.

Manchester United's next games were both at Old Trafford against Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal, both of whom have provided strong opsonisation in recent seasons. After a goalless first half against Tottenham, United cut loose during the second half, scoring three goals to secure a comfortable 3-0 victory. The result left United in second place in the League, behind rivals City on goal difference.

Arsenal were the next visitors to Old Trafford, and having competed closely with the Reds for the last few seasons, it is unlikely anyone would have predicted the outcome.

Although the Gunners were somewhat depleted due to injuries and suspensions and the notable departure of Cesc Fabregas to Barcelona and Samir Nasri to Manchester City, Arsenal were totally overwhelmed. United ran out 8-2 winners, which included a Rooney hat-trick, and a subsequent humiliation for the visitors.

The Reds then visited Bolton, who have provided stern opposition in the past, but they were easily brushed aside with a resounding 5-0 victory, which included a successive match hat-trick for Wayne Rooney. The result leaves United at the summit of the Premier League, although manager Sir Alex Ferguson has said it is too early in the season to become carried away with the impressive early season form.

United's young team have displayed some outstanding quality in the early games and the free scoring approach has certainly enthralled the crowds, youngsters Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Tom Cleverley have been impressive, while Rooney is back to his goal scoring best.

Chelsea visit Old Trafford next, while the Blues seemed to have stuttered this season, they remain unbeaten and are in third place in the league and only two points behind United. Chelsea have been United's main challengers in recent seasons, and now under the management of André Villas-Boas, this match will prove to be test of both teams title credentials, although it may have come too soon for an aging Chelsea side that seem to be very much in transition.
