Premier League Preview: Sunderland Vs Newcastle

Premier League match time is set to brighten the Stadium of Light on January 16, when Sunderland host Newcastle in a second leg derby in match week 23.

Steve Bruce's squad were thrashed by a 5-1 margin in the first leg on October 31, as an inspired Magpies squad rode a Nolan hattrick and a brace by Ameobi.

SEASON 3 PREMIERE

Nolan put his team ahead on 27 minutes, fed by an Ameobi header off a Barton corner. Eight minutes later, he was at it again when he capitalised on a scissor kick by Carroll that landed at his feet, in front of Sunderland's goal. On the break, Onuoha brought down Guttierez in Black Cats' area to gift Hughton's squad a penalty that Ameobi converted. Ameobi had a hand in the next two goals, scoring the fourth on 70 minutes, with a header, after a ball rebounded off the bar. Nolan, fed a header by Ameobi off a corner, completed his hattrick, five minutes later.

The defeat brought Sunderland's seven-match unbeaten run to an end. Newcastle benefited from the sending off of Bramble just after the break after the defender brought down Carroll.

Sunderland's shambolic defending was complemented by Newcastle's opportunism that earned the Magpies a deserved win.

Head to head, in the last 17 league games between the sides, Newcastle have won 8 while Sunderland have emerged victorious in 3, with the remaining 6 games ending in stalemates.

In their last 10 league matches, Sunderland have won 5 while drawing 2 and losing the remaining 3. Newcastle have done a little worse, winning just 3 of their last 10, while drawing 5 and losing 2.

The Black Cats have enjoyed a great home record this season with 6 of 11 games won while drawing 4 and losing just the one. The Magpies have not had the best of away records, with 7 of 10 lost, while winning the solitary game and drawing the remainder.

While Sunderland are coming off a 1-0 away win against Aston Villa in match week 22, their second victory on the trot. Newcastle are coming off a 5-0 home win against West Ham. Like the Black Cats, the Magpies have also had successive wins.

On current form, Sunderland hold a slight edge, though any win will have to be hard earned.

Sunderland had the following men in their starting eleven against Aston Villa: Gordon, Bardsley, Ferdinand, Bramble, Richardson, Elmohamady, Meyler, Henderson, Malbranque, Wellbeck and Bent. Gyan, Riveros and Zenden featured as substitutes.

Newcastle's starting eleven against West Ham comprised Harper, Simpson, Taylor, Coloccini, Barton, Nolan, Tiote, Gutierez, Lovenkrands and Best. Ranger, Ferguson and Jose Enrique were used as substitutes.
