Martial Arts Video - Can You Really Learn Martial Arts by Watching a Video?

Did you know that, contrary to what some people think, watching martial arts videos can be a fine, convenient and cost effective way to learn on your own?

"You can't learn martial arts from a video!" - that's what a lot of people think anyway, especially those who work in the martial arts field. You see, martial artists often tend to be traditionally minded and sometimes downright "old-fashioned" in their thinking. This can be a good thing. One shouldn't be too quick to change the way things have worked in the past.

But step back for a moment and think about this. With modern technology, you can now learn just about anything you want without even stepping outside of your home. You can pick up a foreign language, get an accredited college or nursing degree, learn how to build a house, or just about any other subject through video, distance learning, or DVD. Why should martial arts training be any different?

The reality is that martial arts training is not that different from other subjects. Whether you are a beginner or a more experienced martial artist, you can benefit greatly from video training.

In fact, there are at least 5 good reasons why you should consider learning martial arts from a video.

Reason # 1. Video Shows You Everything You Would See If You Were Really There:

A student who watches a martial arts video will see everything a student would who was really present. True, you can't ask questions when you watch a video (more on that in a minute) but at least with the initial instruction- you miss nothing. This is an effective way to learn and its been proven time and time again (for example, people win grappling tournaments all the time with moves they've learned from a video!).

Reason # 2. Video Allows You To Watch The Instruction Time and Time Again:

You can't rewind and review real life! A lot of people who physically attend martial arts classes aren't allowed to video and they don't bother to take notes either. This means that once they leave the classroom, they stand a good chance of forgetting the key points of the moves (if they remember the moves at all). With video, that class remains "with you" forever and you can revisit it whenever you want.

Reason #3. Video Offers You A Ton of Variety!

With DVD and video, you gain access to an extremely wide variety of martial arts training that is simply not available otherwise. Of course, you can watch and learn from the mainstream Karate, Judo and Kung Fu instructionals if you desire, but today there is much more to choose from. How about learning some Brazilian Capoeira? Would a little Burmese Bando interest you? There are also scores of videos on Filipino knife fighting, African stick fighting, Russian Sambo, Thai Boxing, MMA--you name it! It's amazing how much is available out there. It doesn't matter where you live anymore, today you can train in just about anything you want, from anywhere in the world!.

Reason #4: With Video You Can Train Whenever and Wherever You Want!

Woke up at 3am because you can't sleep? Bored at home and want something fun and interesting to do? Traveling? Pop in a DVD and learn some Muay Thai!

Reason #5: You Can Save a Ton of Money With Video Training

Video instruction is cheaper because you don't have to pay an instructor, pay membership fees to a school or gym, take time off work or spend gas money traveling. Also, if you purchase high quality instructional DVDs, they can have a years worth of instruction packed into them. (the average price in the U.S. for a year of training at a martial arts school is about 00)

But Is Video As Good As Training With a Real Live Instructor?

No of course not. Nobody with a lick of sense would claim that using a video is better than training "live" with a qualified instructor. No video or book can provide that real time interaction between instructor and student, and that's what makes training in person the best option for learning.

However, a lot of people simply aren't able to train in person with live instructor. Work schedule, family life, and other responsibilities simply take precedence. Sometimes traffic is a problem, and for other people there is not even a school within a hundred miles that teaches what they want to learn. For these people, martial arts training by video can make a great alternative.

So, how does a person learning from a martial arts DVD make up for that luxury of having a living, breathing instructor at their side? What they have to do is substitute instructor correction with personal correction. Remember, you see everything that someone who is "really there" sees. You just have to be diligent about making your technique look like the instructor's on the video. Perform the move in a mirror, ask a friend to compare your technique with the instructor's, video tape yourself or do whatever it takes to make sure you are doing the technique correctly. Once you do that - bam! Rest assured that you can indeed make great progress and learn an absolute TON from watching videos, even if its not equal to working with a qualified trainer.

So, can you really learn martial arts from a video? Absolutely. For those who are willing to "get with it" and move beyond the "old fashioned" thinking, you can learn - and learn a lot - by watching a martial arts video.
