Learning Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is now a popular martial art that a great number of dojos have opened since Royce Gracie won the first every UFC tournament. Today, Braziilan Jiu Jitsu is among the most popular sports in the whole world. It has become a vital pillar in the ever growing popular sport of Mixed Martial Arts. But how could one get the best of BJJ in a dojo? There should be some pointers for someone to maximize learning and to have that coveted belt promotion in no time.

1. Always learn the 3 Ts
Be Technical, be Tough, be technical. If you are wondering why technical has been mentioned twice, it is for the reason that BJJ is about techniques and never about brawn. Ever since it's mainstream debut in UFC 1; it has been clear that a 170 pound man can topple someone weighing 200 plus pounds! As some of the black belts would say: "technique over strength".

2. Remove the egos inside the dojo
The dojo literally means school. It is a place of learning. You should openly accept the techniques taught by a higher belt Jiu Jitsu artist. If you were taught to defend with a rubber guard or with a spider guard, always absorb everything before clarifying any questions at the end of the session.

3. Tap before you get injured.
Tapping signifies that you had enough. When you get caught with a submission, always remember to tap before being yanked out off your degree of rotation. Avoid injuries by doing this. Just imagine the duration of recovery when an injury occurs compared to the simple gesture of admitting that you get caught by a submission?

4. Always protect your sparring partners
If you want to have a good relationship with other players inside your dojo, you should always be courteous to them even in sparring. Don't go too hard since you won't learn from being too stiff and you could also injure your partner.

5. Work your weaknesses. Improve your strengths
If you happen to have a good base, do every drill to improve such. But if you happen to have a less spectacular bottom game; make sure to stay on your back for a longer period of time during sparring. And always try to avail of colored belt players sparring partners to learn from them.
