It's Premier League match time at Bloomfield Road as Blackpool get set to host Manchester United on Saturday, December 4.
Manchester United are coming off an imperious 7-1 thumping of Blackburn in match week 15. With their back-line appearing to settle down and their attack back to full strength (with Hernandez on the bench) United are beginning to look more like the side that won the championship three years running.
SEASON 3 PREMIERE
United have not been at the top of their game this season and are yet at the top of the table, and that's an ominous warning for their rivals. Blackburn were consistently mediocre in a game where everything went right for the Old Trafford squad. Berbatov with five goals came within a whisker of setting a Premiership record of six goals by a player in a match. Nani was brilliant and everyone chipped in, whether Rooney or Park or Anderson. with Sir Alex's squad 3-0 up at half-time, the question was as to how hungry United were and whether they would take it easy after the break. That question was answered emphatically.
Blackpool held Bolton to a 2-2 draw in match week 15, a game they could have won. Bolton have emerged as one of the strongest teams this season and Blackpool's credentials in the top flight can no longer be questioned. Barring the first quarter hour, the Seasiders took the fight to Owen Coyle's charges. Vaughan was brilliant as he won the midfield and effectively controlled the game for the most part. The backline was obdurate in the face of an attack comprising the likes of Elmander and Kevin Davies. I can only visually the Tangerines getting stronger from here on, with the possibility of relegation no longer moot.
Head to head, Manchester United have a 47-22 advantage over Blackpool, in 80 games played overall. In away games against the Seasiders, the Red devils hold a 19-15 advantage. Saturday's match will the first meetng between the sides in the Premier League, this being the debut season for the Tangerines.
United will not get to play a mediocre rival - as Black burn proved to be in match week 15 - every day. Blackpool are no pushovers, and Bloomfield Road is not the friendliest venue for travellers. Add to that United's less than impressive record on the road this season, and we could be in for an interesting game. That said, Blackpool's open game will leave them vulnerable to swift counter-attacks, the Red devils' forte. Expect United to prevail in a hard-fought game.
